Governor Rendell Nominates Steven Kaplan to Serve as Banking Secretary

Governor Edward G. Rendell today nominated Steven Kaplan, chief of staff for Mellon Financial Corporation’s Mid-Atlantic Region and chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Charitable Trusts, to serve as Pennsylvania’s banking secretary.

“Steve Kaplan has more than two decades of experience in the banking industry in Pennsylvania,” Governor Rendell said. “I’ve known Steve for 30 years and his extensive experience in so many aspects of the financial services industry will be a tremendous asset to the commonwealth. I look forward to welcoming him to our team.”

“I am eager to continue Governor Rendell’s reinvention of the Banking department,” Kaplan said. “Assuring that Pennsylvanians will have access to safe, secure financial products and services and the education necessary to decide which will best serve their needs will be among my top priorities.”

Kaplan has served in various leadership capacities at Mellon since joining the corporation in 1982. Previously he was assistant district attorney in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Kaplan, 55, earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a law degree from Temple University. He currently serves as a member of the President’s Advisory Board at Temple University and as a trustee at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. He is also an active board member for numerous organizations, including the Congreso de Latinos Unidos, the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the Pyramid Club and the Anti-Defamation League.

Pending confirmation by the Pennsylvania Senate, Kaplan will succeed Victoria Reider, who was named acting banking secretary when A. William Schenck III resigned last fall.

“I appreciate the excellent job Vicki Reider did as acting secretary of banking,” Governor Rendell said. “She helped keep the department moving forward during the recent turbulence in the national sub-prime mortgage lending market.”

The Banking department protects citizens from financial abuse, ensures the safety and soundness of state-chartered financial institutions and houses the Pennsylvania Office of Financial Education. More information about the department may be found at http://www.banking.state.pa.us
